Should The Rangers Deal Their King

New York, NY (WFAN)  -- The Rangers are in the midst of a small crisis and missing their #1 and #2 pivots are an issue for any team.

The biggest issue I think facing the Rangers is their goaltending. There is a consensus in Rangerland that Henrik Lundqvist is John Vanbeisbrouck, a really good goalie who will not win you the Stanley Cup. There are too many holes in Lundqvist’s game and the tough part is now he is entrenched as a Ranger. While Wade Redden and Michal Rozsival get booed every night, the attention has never been shifted towards the goalie. Lundqvist gives the Rangers some great games but far too often for someone being billed as your franchise goalie he gives up a bad goal at a bad time or just has a bad game.

Find a team that needs a goalie as their last piece to winning the Cup. Is it Chicago, is it Detroit, is it Washington? Think about what you can get back from those teams in a trade if you moved Lundqvist now while he has good trade value. You’d need a goalie back; Steve Valiquette isn’t the guy to play 60 games for you. Let’s say hypothetically the Wings gave you Jimmy Howard back in the deal. Good goalie, can play in the NHL, has yet to prove himself as a #1 but certainly could be one (and he is an upstate NY kid). That gives you a season to see if he is your guy of the future or if you need to find a #1 but you certainly have the time to do it. Remember, this Ranger team is a good team but not a Cup contender so you are taking one step back to take three forward.

Lundqvist has been good for the franchise on and off ice and trading him could send some major shock waves through the team. He is a popular guy in the organization. He’s been the face of the team through good and bad and never backs down from the public in adverse times. However, his play at times could be the reason they have had some of those adverse times.

It is certainly food for thought. You have to determine if he is the guy who can win you a Cup. If he isn’t, why are you keeping him here?

There is a great scene in the movie Major League where play by play voice Harry Doyle is on the radio and says, “Well fans, in case you haven’t noticed and judging by the attendance you haven’t, …..”.

If the Islanders still had radio broadcasters (the radio broadcast is a simulcast of the TV broadcast) they could actually repeat those exact lines because much like the fictional Indians in the movie, the real life Islanders are quietly climbing the standings and playing good hockey. It was stated in this column about this time last season that if given time and some assets, Coach Scott Gordon would be successful in regrouping this battered franchise and get it back on track.

Gordon doesn’t have to make the playoffs to prove that. If the Islanders are playing relevant games in February that is a huge victory for a team that hasn’t had its #1 goalie in a year and a half and goes to game time every night with a roster that at times pales in comparison with the star power of other elite teams in the conference.

It brings me back to what TSN and NBC analyst Pierre McGuire said after the Islanders drafted John Tavares last June with the first overall pick. He said, “The Isles now have the fire power with Tavares, Bailey, Okposo, and Striet to go into Philly, Washington, Boston and the Garden and win games.”

Throw in Jack Hillen’s performance on the backline and dependable goaltending from NHL goalies and not the borderline AHL’ers they had in net last season and the Islanders have something. They might not have the depth to stay in the race all season and the return of Rick DiPietro in goal notwithstanding, the Isles could be headed back to the pack as the campaign wears on. However the winner here is Gordon who proved to himself and to the NHL that he can coach in this league.

Yes. Trade him now. It would be a birthday present for me.
11/18/2009 9:02PM
No.
This might be the absolute dumbest Rangers-related comment I have ever had the misfortune of reading. What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
11/18/2009 9:17PM
Are you serious?
No wonder you post as the Masked Man. If you had a name, you'd have no reputation as a sportswriter. My dog could write a more logical article. Trade Henrik? You can't possibly be serious.
11/18/2009 9:36PM
Post your e-mail
This is the dumbest article I have ever read in my entire life. Never write again, seriously.
11/18/2009 10:45PM
Might be the dumbest thing I have ever read.

11/19/2009 10:10AM

11/19/2009 12:28PM
Are you serious ?
He is not the reason we are losing
11/19/2009 12:30PM
LMAO
Fire this moron now, Lundqvist is good enough to win a gold medal, and the a league championship in Sweden, but not a Stanley Cup?? Perhaps if u used the 15mil from Redden and Blowzaval on some real talent the Rangers wouldn't be in such a bad situation that it forces idiots like yourself to question if they should keep the best franchise player they have had since Brian Leetch
11/19/2009 12:30PM
So Dumb

Sp?
Spelled Vanbiesbrouck wrong. WTF!
11/19/2009 1:26PM
No way
Are you guys on crack? Have you watched the games. Then you know it's not him, it's killing the PP and better forechecking and passing. Where are you Brian Leetch??
11/19/2009 2:32PM
dumbass
you are a dumbass sir throw in gabby too to help why not
11/19/2009 2:57PM
You're an idiot
first off, it's not Lundqvist's fault Sather has built a so so team around him, secondly if you paid attention Redden isn't getting booed this season, thirdly, Lundqvist can carry a team and yes is terrible glove side but if the wings can win with osgood it proves it's not just about the goalie but the team around it too.
11/19/2009 7:21PM
Town of Hempstead
Hey you can climb of the standings woo hoo, But we can't beat the Town of Hempstead so no new arena and soon to be sold to another market
11/20/2009 10:30AM
Chris in Suffolk
This coming from a station with no ratings. Do you even know what hockey is? Go back to crying over the Mets and Yankees and leave the true fans to hockey. Try watching a game before writing an article on it. You do realize that he won a gold medal in the Olympics, I think that alone shows he is capable at winning a championship.
11/20/2009 2:20PM
This is a joke idea
"Henrik Lundqvist is John Vanbeisbrouck, a really good goalie who will not win you the Stanley Cup" ... Are you kidding me?? He didn't have problems winning an Olympic gold against teams like Russia and Canada, which have far more firepower than any NHL team. The Rangers have a young defense that will continue to mature.
11/20/2009 4:49PM
Idea
Gilles illemure has been spotted workng out and is primed for a comeback!
11/20/2009 7:09PM

11/24/2009 12:05AM
haha
i am a devils fan. and i'll admit henrik is the best thing about the rangers. you cant trade him
11/24/2009 10:34AM
couchpotato
You can't trade him. He almost always beats the Devils. The Rangers problem is scoring not their goaltending.
12/22/2009 11:01AM
With idiotic articles like this one, no wonder you wear a mask
Henrik Lundqvist can't win a Stanley Cup? Interesting, but he can win an Olympic Gold. Has it ever occurred to you that the team lacks a second scoring punch and has a group of offensive deffensemen? The Rangers need a legitimate second line and a big deffenseman to protect Lundqvist.

Trying to Create Space

I am not the biggest fan of the NBA. It’s not a personal thing against basketball. I played lots of basketball when I was a kid. However, I don’t like the fact that most trades are now made based on ‘dumping salary.’ Teams make trades to free up cap space and try to acquire players with expiring contracts.

Halfway Home

Looking at the standings in the NHL right now, one things stands out more than anything. I cannot believe we are just over halfway through the season. It is time to look at the some highs and lows of the NHL season thus far, not only with the Rangers, but in the entire league.

I'm Not Pro Olympics

I love the Winter Olympics. Skiing, snowboarding and especially hockey. The rink is bigger, the game is more open and it is a break from having a true passionate rooting interest. I am not saying I don't root for Team USA...

Stuck in the Middle

So here we are. Basically at the midpoint of the NHL season. Hard to believe, really. The Rangers are exactly where expected, right in the middle of the pack. This comes to no real shock, even despite their 7-1 start to the season. They have had some good wins, some bad losses and a whole lot of in the middle.

Missing Center Piece

So last week after punch to the stomach after punch to the stomach from the Rangers, I all but wrote them off for the season. Of course, since then they have won a few games...
