Cash Is the Man

New York, NY (WFAN)  -- Random Thoughts the week after World Series win #27:

*Did any of us really see this coming two years ago? Remember when Hank Steinbrenner was running amok, Joe Girardi was replacing Joe Torre, A-Rod was opting out and back in, and Johan Santana was on his way to Flushing instead of the Bronx?

Brian Cashman sat in front of the media last October and had what I called his "You can't handle the truth" moment, telling us all that he was going to re-write the story. None of us knew that he would be proven right only a year later.

While all the chaos was going on, Cashman was the constant. Even ownership was in turmoil, from the admission that George really wasn't in charge anymore to Hank creating headlines to Hal pushing Hank into the background and creating a more stable environment.

Cashman went on a mission last winter and hauled in the biggest and most influential free agent crop in team history. CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and Mark Teixeira all could have been very rich men elsewhere. But they all came to the new Yankee Stadium, and Cashman made good on his promise.

Gene Michael and even Bob Watson got the credit for the great Yankee teams of the last dynasty. If the Yankees build a new one (and remember, Yankee championships usually come in bunches), then Cashman will be the one who gets the credit. And he will deserve it.

*Here's somebody else that deserves some credit: Bill Livesey, the 69-year old lifelong baseball man who just won his first World Series ring. Livesey, the man who oversaw the drafting and development of core Yankees like Jeter, Posada, Pettitte, and Rivera among others, was fired after the 1995 season. Livesey's fingerprints were all over the dynasty Yankees of the late 90's, but he never got a ring. He was brought back last year as a special assistant in the scouting department. Livesey should savor this World Series win because the core Yankees that he nurtured were still a big reason why they won.

*Is Jorge Posada a Hall-of-Famer? It will be worth discussing when he finally hangs it up. He's still far behind the all-time catching leaders in home runs and runs batted in. But here's something else to consider-since Yogi Berra's election in 1972, only three catchers have been elected by the writers' ballot (Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk, and Gary Carter) and Posada owns more World Series rings than all three combined.

*For all the years we spent wondering if Alex Rodriguez was a winning player, the argument ends here. No matter what happens from here on out, he was an integral part of World Series championship number 27. He wasn't just along for the ride. A-Rod=World Series champ. Live with it.

*Joe Girardi entered the 2009 season knowing he would be fired if he failed to make the playoffs again. Now that he's won the World Series, he deserves a contract extension. Girardi's original three-year deal expires after next season. I would fully expect the Steinbrenners to reward Girardi with an extension this off-season.

*For all the talk of Derek Jeter being too old to play shortstop for a winning team, he keeps finding ways to quiet us all, doesn't he? He became the first 35-year old regular shortstop on a World Series champion since Pee Wee Reese on the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers. Jeter saved his best for last-his 11 hits in the World Series were his most in any of the 28 postseason series of his career.

*Instant replay will not be advanced in any greater form than it is now. Right now it's too hard to set the parameters and have everybody agree on it. The only thing I'm curious about is why they can't use the same computerized technology used in tennis for line calls to get the fair/foul calls right.

*Lots of time for hot stove discussion. Back with more of that another time.

Cashman got a lot of heat for not trading for Santana, but in the end he was right.

I think any human on earth given the Yankee bank account to get players would have done the same. Cashman is no genius, just a man who has a large bank account.

Pleading the Fifth

Go back to 1997, the year after the Yankees won their first World Series under Joe Torre, and two of the most talked about players were a couple of kids who were less than two years removed from their big league debuts in Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.

Healthy and Happy

Welcome to February. It may not feel like it outside, but spring is right around the corner. Pitchers and catchers are just two weeks away, and if that’s enough to warm you up right about now then try another pair of socks and some hot tea.

New York Welcomes Granderson

Curtis Granderson arrived in New York and his introductory press conference was the first at new Yankee Stadium, held in the spacious Legends Room.

First Class

I can’t imagine I’ll ever have the privilege of covering a player like Hideki Matsui again. The word “unique” is thrown around too much, but this was indeed a unique experience, right from Day One.

Everyone Loves A Parade

The Perks of This Job!!!!!  The day started at 5AM. I had 3 alarm clocks and a coffee pot set, so I wouldn't oversleep. The call was for 7:30 at the Stadium to start getting on the 20 buses...

11 Down, None To Go!!

On December 26th, 1919, Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees to finance the musical No, No, Nanette. Since that day, every time the Yankees win the World Series, it's because they have more money than anyone else...

A Tale of Two Cities

The Yankees traveling party left the Stadium this morning on 3 buses to go to Penn. Station, for the Amtrak Trek to Philadelphia. As the buses turned down 31st Street, we saw the crowds...

7 Down, 4 To Go

Back in 1986, a friend of mine, a 20 year season ticket holder at Yankee Stadium, said to me: "Who do I root for in this thing...it's THEM against THEM!" I guess Mets fans think the same thing right now?

Saving Our Pastime's Past

I’ve heard a bunch of different reactions to Mark McGwire’s “revelation” (seriously, if you were surprised by what he admitted, you need to stop taking your stupid pills). Some people were angry, others were disappointed, some were sick of steroids becoming a story again and other people actually felt sorry for the man since he kept crying.

Cashman's Folly

Someone is going to have to explain this one to me. Why wouldn’t the same reasons the Yankees had for not signing Hideki Matsui also apply to Nick Johnson?

No Holiday Shopping

The Yankees should just close up shop, and pack it in until 2010. The only thing left to do is leave a contract offer on the table to Johnny Damon to think about over Christmas. Santa Steinbrenner should be fairly generous with a two year contract in the neighborhood of 20 million dollars. If another team finds him worthy of a three year deal, the Yankees should be content to watch him walk and

Expect Empty Stockings

I hate to be the Grinch that stole Christmas for all you Yankees fans out there, but this is going to be a quiet offseason. There isn't going to be a CC Sabathia. There isn't going to be a Mark Teixeira. There isn't even going to be an A.J. Burnett.
