11 Down, None To Go!!

New York, NY (WFAN)  -- On December 26th, 1919, Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees to finance the musical No, No, Nanette. Since that day, every time the Yankees win the World Series, it's because they have more money than anyone else, and can buy a championship. The truth is that different teams have won the World Series more times in baseball than in any other sport. When the Yankees lose, the cry is, "See, you can't buy a championship." When the Yankees win, the same cry is, "They bought their way to the title!"

Give it a rest!

Is it too early for me to start campaigning for the Yankees to re-sign both Damon and Matsui?

Damaso Marte was a terrific interview after the game on the field....who knew???

Hank Steinbrenner stood in the corner of the clubhouse taking in the celebration. He told me that he kept tabs on his dad throughout the game. George, Hank told me, kept his emotions under control until the end...then got pretty excited. Hank, also, was honest and happy on the air ..."Signing those free agents was a no brainer." None of the usual..."Well, we did what we thought was best...and hoped it would work out!"

Andy Pettitte became the first pitcher ever to start and win clinching games in each postseason series. By the way, can we please put all this ludicrous, "So-and-so can't pitch on 3 days rest" nonsense to bed for the winter? Is Andy going to take his fifth ring and go home? The Yankees hope not, but it would be a nice way to go out, wouldn't it?

The core four are still the core four, aren't they?

You can point to the second game in Atlanta (June 23rd I believe) as the start of this group of Yankees becoming a team. Brian Cashman showed up, read everyone the riot act, Joe Girardi pulled a Red Auerbach and got himself kicked out of the game, Francisco Cervelli hit his first major league home run, and since then, the Yankees took off. Just for the record, the movie being watched in the clubhouse that nite was "Miracle."

CC Sabathia was everything the Yankees could've hoped for, on and off the field.

AJ Burnett was exactly what most of us thought he would be, the little girl with the curl. His first and second starts of the World Series were his whole season...that was AJ. He is a GREAT teammate...e.g....earlier in the year, I walked over to him and he was looking at his blackberry/ipod...whatever electronic device it was that I don't understand. I looked at the screen and saw what looked like Chinese. I said..."What are you doing?" He said.."I'm trying to learn Mandarin, so Wang has someone to talk to in his own language." THAT is AJ Burnett, pies not withstanding. For the record, Girardi got the pie last nite.

Mark Teixeira, I'm sure, would've liked his offense in the World Series to match both his season, and his glove, but he got what he came for...a ring.

Did Alex Rodriguez finally become "a Yankee?" You decide.

Joe Girardi believed in "his way" of managing, stuck to it, and it worked. He raised some eyebrows in the regular season with his moves and micro-managing style, and more than a few eyebrows in the World Series. It was only a year ago that everyone was saying Girardi couldn't deal with NY, the media and the pressure. He adapted the way he dealt with people and situations, not an easy thing to do in this town.

And now he gets to change his Number to 28.

But, for me, it's all about "the old guys"....Damon and the Core Four.

Parade is tomorrow. We gather at the stadium at 8AM. If you've never seen this before, put your down jackets on and get down there...it's an unforgettable experience. The Parade starts at 11.

I said the Yanks in 6, I seem to remember...being right is a great responsibility!

And to Harry Frazee, who sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees to finance No, No Nanette? Thanx to you too....my first Broadway Musical? As a replacement in the revival of No, No Nanette in the early 70's. It all comes around, doesn't it!!!

Pleading the Fifth

Go back to 1997, the year after the Yankees won their first World Series under Joe Torre, and two of the most talked about players were a couple of kids who were less than two years removed from their big league debuts in Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.

Healthy and Happy

Welcome to February. It may not feel like it outside, but spring is right around the corner. Pitchers and catchers are just two weeks away, and if that’s enough to warm you up right about now then try another pair of socks and some hot tea.

New York Welcomes Granderson

Curtis Granderson arrived in New York and his introductory press conference was the first at new Yankee Stadium, held in the spacious Legends Room.

First Class

I can’t imagine I’ll ever have the privilege of covering a player like Hideki Matsui again. The word “unique” is thrown around too much, but this was indeed a unique experience, right from Day One.

Everyone Loves A Parade

The Perks of This Job!!!!!  The day started at 5AM. I had 3 alarm clocks and a coffee pot set, so I wouldn't oversleep. The call was for 7:30 at the Stadium to start getting on the 20 buses...

A Tale of Two Cities

The Yankees traveling party left the Stadium this morning on 3 buses to go to Penn. Station, for the Amtrak Trek to Philadelphia. As the buses turned down 31st Street, we saw the crowds...

7 Down, 4 To Go

Back in 1986, a friend of mine, a 20 year season ticket holder at Yankee Stadium, said to me: "Who do I root for in this thing...it's THEM against THEM!" I guess Mets fans think the same thing right now?

Saving Our Pastime's Past

I’ve heard a bunch of different reactions to Mark McGwire’s “revelation” (seriously, if you were surprised by what he admitted, you need to stop taking your stupid pills). Some people were angry, others were disappointed, some were sick of steroids becoming a story again and other people actually felt sorry for the man since he kept crying.

Cashman's Folly

Someone is going to have to explain this one to me. Why wouldn’t the same reasons the Yankees had for not signing Hideki Matsui also apply to Nick Johnson?

No Holiday Shopping

The Yankees should just close up shop, and pack it in until 2010. The only thing left to do is leave a contract offer on the table to Johnny Damon to think about over Christmas. Santa Steinbrenner should be fairly generous with a two year contract in the neighborhood of 20 million dollars. If another team finds him worthy of a three year deal, the Yankees should be content to watch him walk and

Expect Empty Stockings

I hate to be the Grinch that stole Christmas for all you Yankees fans out there, but this is going to be a quiet offseason. There isn't going to be a CC Sabathia. There isn't going to be a Mark Teixeira. There isn't even going to be an A.J. Burnett.
