New York, NY (WFAN) -- AJ Burnett might not have been very good on Monday nite, but it had nothing to do with his pitching on 3 days rest. If you've watched AJ all year, you've seen that before...like the little girl with the curl. That was the guy who let a 6 run lead disappear at Fenway Park. He said after the game he "let down 25 guys and the city." A little dramatic, but it was very heartfelt.
Would it destroy any master plan if Robinson Cano or Mark Teixeira got a hit every now and then? Just asking. Teixeira was out taking extra BP yesterday at the workout. As we used to say in theater, "They'll forgive you anything, if you give 'em a great death scene." (Get it...end of season, death scene...final game?)
I wouldn't be surprised to see Jerry Hairston in right field tonite. I'm not sure Swisher and Pedro's changeup are a good match.
Andy Pettitte said yesterday that the only thing that feels different going in 3 days rest is that he might fatigue a little earlier than he would on normal rest. If Andy gives the Yankees 6 innings and gives up 3 runs, that should be enough to match Pedro, and the Phillies bullpen. Pedro is used to pitching once a week these days, so "normal" rest is NOT "normal" rest today. He is still Pedro, still reads batters, still is good enough to get 15 outs. Charlie Manuel perhaps left him in an inning too long in Game 2...but if you were managing this bullpen, you'd leave him in also. You can rewrite that statement and replace Manuel's name with Joe Giradi's if you like. The feeling is exactly the same...except for Mariano.
Expect Mariano to get 6 outs tonite if the Yankees have any kind of a lead. Perhaps if the team is 6 runs ahead, he MIGHT go to Joba or David Robertson, or, most of all Damaso Marte for one inning. But any sign of trouble, Mariano is up.
The conversation of Mariano pitching 3 innings? If Giradi does that, and it doesn't work, who exactly pitches tomorrow?
I said Yankees in 6, and I still believe that. Besides, it's supposed to rain tomorrow...enough is enough!
I'm enclosing a blog by Ken Levine (he is the talented writer of CHEERS, has been a broadcaster for the Orioles and Mariners and now does Dodger Talk in LA)...this is being passed around the press box to all the beat writers and broadcasters...enjoy!
Emotion is for the fans, not the people who run the teams. And while Brian Cashman has as special a place as you do for the players who just brought home #27, he’s not going to let his heart keep him from moving the 2010 Yankees forward.
Did any of us really see this coming two years ago? Remember when Hank Steinbrenner was running amok, Joe Girardi was replacing Joe Torre, A-Rod was opting out and back in...
“I’ve said it time and time again, playing championship-caliber baseball starts with pitching and defense, and I think those two components were certainly the foundation for our success in 2009. I’ve always taken a great deal of pride in my defense..
“After the overwhelming public response to the historic achievement of our 27th World Championship, I would like to thank our fans for their highly spirited and remarkably steadfast support this season."
The Perks of This Job!!!!! The day started at 5AM. I had 3 alarm clocks and a coffee pot set, so I wouldn't oversleep. The call was for 7:30 at the Stadium to start getting on the 20 buses...
On December 26th, 1919, Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees to finance the musical No, No, Nanette. Since that day, every time the Yankees win the World Series, it's because they have more money than anyone else...
The Yankees traveling party left the Stadium this morning on 3 buses to go to Penn. Station, for the Amtrak Trek to Philadelphia. As the buses turned down 31st Street, we saw the crowds...
Back in 1986, a friend of mine, a 20 year season ticket holder at Yankee Stadium, said to me: "Who do I root for in this thing...it's THEM against THEM!" I guess Mets fans think the same thing right now?
Listening to WFAN since the Yankees won their first World Series since 2000 has me very annoyed. First, here are the things I’ve had to hear from Mets fans...
Is anyone else tired of hearing that whenever a Yankees team doesn’t score runs it’s because the opposing pitcher was simply too good? All these pitchers can’t be throwing lights out.
This one was not on the manager: A.J. Burnett was dealing and there was no reason for Joe Girardi to take him out after the Yankees took the lead in the top of the 7th.
