Don't Blame Joe

yankees@wfan.com

New York, NY (WFAN)  -- Game Five Thoughts

- This one was not on the manager: A.J. Burnett was dealing and there was no reason for Joe Girardi to take him out after the Yankees took the lead in the top of the 7th. After giving up the four runs in the 1st he pitched just as good as Lackey, and had a low pitch count. I question why Marte was brought in instead of Coke, but the move worked. Phil Hughes was the next logical candidate and he just didn't get the job done. Don't blame Girardi for this one.

- Putrid Pen: The bullpen has been a strength the entire season, but in the playoffs it has not. The main set-up men to get to Mariano, Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain, have been unreliable at best. Both have given up hits and runs in big spots. Hughes came in with a runner on 3rd with one out and a one run lead. Letting one run score is not good, but understandable. Letting a potential winning run cross the plate is completely unacceptable. He even shook off Posada twice on the 1-2 pitch. Hughes is too good of a pitcher to let that happen. Girardi might have to think about using Robertson in those spots moving forward.

- Steaming Pile of Swish: I've had enough. I feel like I'm watching an awful movie that I can't walk out on. He's lost at the plate. Just lost. I realize a lefty is starting in Game 6, but I'm not sure I care anymore. I'm tired of looking at Nick Swisher. I wonder how all those antics and loud music goes over in the clubhouse after he leaves a village on base? Probably not so well.

- Halo Momentum: The Yankees have to be careful. This is a type of loss that can turn a series and give an opponent all the momentum in the world. If this series gets to a Game 7, even with it at Yankee Stadium, it's a crapshoot at best. Yes, even with CC on the mound.

- Rising Offense: Pretty much everyone except for Swisher is starting to hit, and that's bad news for the Angels. Mark Teixeira, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano are all making better contact and hitting the ball with authority. I'd be feeling a lot more nervous about this series if I didn't think the offense was in a serious grove.

Schmeelk Snippets

- Can someone, anyone, please get out Jeff Mathis?

- Did you believe Mike Scioscia taking out John Lackey when he did? That was not a good decision, even if it meant turning Teixeira around. Lackey was pitching too well.

- Sabathia is the MVP of this series, assuming A-Rod doesn't do anything spectacular, or Sabathia anything horrendous, in Game 6 or Game 7. If there is a rainout on Saturday night, the Yankees should still pitch Andy Pettitte in Game 6, and Sabathia in Game 7. I don't get the logic of moving Sabathia up. Pettitte winds up on too many days rest and Sabathia is lost for Game 1 of the World Series.

- Thank you to my good friend who shall remain nameless, who decided to have his wedding reception Saturday night. Guess who can't use his ticket to ALCS Game 6? And thanks to the NFL for scheduling Giants-Cards as a Sunday Night Game. Guess who has to work the game and can't use his ticket to ALCS Game 7? Gonna be a great weekend!

I'll be tweeting the entire postseason (and from weddings, apparently) at: http://twitter.com/Schmeelk

Don't Blame Joe
You can't bench Swish now... he's due!

Girardi blew it - Burnett should not have come out to picth the 7th at all. He'd been on the bench for an extended period of time during the top of the inning and as we all know is not always a control pitcher. Should have been Joba, Hughes Mariano.

Joe blew it
Burnett was cold after sitting for the top of the 7th. Should have Joba, Hughes then Mariano. Goes from micro managing to under managing.

Swish benched Gardiner in
It's time Swisher couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. Gardner is not a downgrade at this point.

Phills
Is no way the Yanks can beat the Phillies. So, win against LA and enjoy the 3 day celebration.

Hughes
I just wanted to clarify that Hughes came on with 2 outs and a runner on third. Figgins bunted and Abreu grounded out to 1st to Teixeira.

MVP
Sabathia was great, but it was one game. I have a hard time seeing how he can win the MVP when he was in just one game, at least at this point. MVP is clearly A-Rod.

Joe made the decision
Big mistake to pitch Burnett. He has won all year in stadium. Now Yanks face a more likely game 7 where, as we all know, anything can happen. If Yankees lose, it's completely on Girardi's head. It is the mistake of an anxious, impatient man, not a veteran manager cool under pressure.

There's No Crying In Baseball

Emotion is for the fans, not the people who run the teams. And while Brian Cashman has as special a place as you do for the players who just brought home #27, he’s not going to let his heart keep him from moving the 2010 Yankees forward.

Cash Is the Man

Did any of us really see this coming two years ago? Remember when Hank Steinbrenner was running amok, Joe Girardi was replacing Joe Torre, A-Rod was opting out and back in...

Gold Glove Awards

“I’ve said it time and time again, playing championship-caliber baseball starts with pitching and defense, and I think those two components were certainly the foundation for our success in 2009. I’ve always taken a great deal of pride in my defense..

Joint Statement from Hal and Hank Steinbrenner

“After the overwhelming public response to the historic achievement of our 27th World Championship, I would like to thank our fans for their highly spirited and remarkably steadfast support this season."

The Perks of This Job!!!!!  The day started at 5AM. I had 3 alarm clocks and a coffee pot set, so I wouldn't oversleep. The call was for 7:30 at the Stadium to start getting on the 20 buses...

11 Down, None To Go!!

On December 26th, 1919, Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees to finance the musical No, No, Nanette. Since that day, every time the Yankees win the World Series, it's because they have more money than anyone else...

A Tale of Two Cities

The Yankees traveling party left the Stadium this morning on 3 buses to go to Penn. Station, for the Amtrak Trek to Philadelphia. As the buses turned down 31st Street, we saw the crowds...

7 Down, 4 To Go

Back in 1986, a friend of mine, a 20 year season ticket holder at Yankee Stadium, said to me: "Who do I root for in this thing...it's THEM against THEM!" I guess Mets fans think the same thing right now?

Listening to WFAN since the Yankees won their first World Series since 2000 has me very annoyed. First, here are the things I’ve had to hear from Mets fans...

Three Day Monty

What, you thought it would be easy?  There should be little surprise the Yankees are heading back to New York to finish off the World Series.

Hey, Offense. Wake Up!!!

Is anyone else tired of hearing that whenever a Yankees team doesn’t score runs it’s because the opposing pitcher was simply too good? All these pitchers can’t be throwing lights out.
