The Kid Is The Key

New York, NY (WFAN)  -- Sometimes, I really hate this time of year. There are few things more depressing than increasingly cold weather, dying trees, and the ever present knowledge that before you know it you will be shoveling snow. However, just as my depression becomes unbearable I remember one thing that makes it all seem a heck of a lot better. Hockey is back. Yes, like a good friend that picks you up from your girlfriend’s apartment when she throws you out, hockey brings joy to your life when everything else seems to be falling apart. And more importantly for you folks, it’s not just hockey that is back, but Islanders hockey.

The season starts Saturday as the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins come to the Island. I’ll preview that matchup and the season itself a little later in the week, but for now let’s take a look at some of the biggest storylines heading into this season.

1) John Tavares: This is unquestionably the number 1 story line going into the season. Not only was Tavares the Islanders number 1 pick, but he has been one of the most highly anticipated prospects for awhile. Add to this that the Islanders couldn’t score a goal to save their lives last year, and Tavares is in the unusual position of being able to make a huge impact as a rookie. So will Tavares be as good as advertised? Well on the bright side you’re talking about a guy with tremendously talented hands, a guy who has a natural ability to score, and a guy that has dominated at every level he has advanced to. That being said, if there is one critique scouts point to in the boy wonder's armor it’s that he may be a bit slow. In the long term this will likely not cause him any problems because he is so talented in other areas, but the NHL style of play is significantly faster than anything he’s experienced before so adjustment may be difficult. Bottom line: Tavares will contribute to the team’s offense in a big way, they were so bad last year there’s no way he doesn’t improve it. Just expect a few growing pains people. I know you want him to be your savior, but even John Tavares can’t turn water into wine quite yet.

2) Goalies: The Islanders made some great moves to acquire goaltending depth in the offseason by signing Dwayne Roloson and Marty Biron. However, the question looms large. What the heck is going on with Rick DiPietro? All we really know is that he is rehabbing and taking it slow to avoid getting hurt again. Which is all fine and good, but at some point you have to wonder if he’s ever going to be able to hit the ice again and be a true impact player for this team. Regardless, it’s going to be an interesting year as we wait to see which one of these guys ultimately emerges as the Islanders number 1 goaltender. Assuming DiPietro’s return is awhile away, my money is on Biron. The guy is incredibly talented despite the fact that he always seems to get overlooked by his teams.

3) Coaching: Scott Gordon enters his second year as head coach of the Isles. No one would suggest he’s in any sort of hot seat, but make no mistake folks, this is definitely a big season where Gordon can shine. Anytime you have a team with so many young players this really amps up the importance of good coaching. Add into this that one of those young players is a number 1 pick that is supposed to become your scoring machine, and that you have questions about who will get the most time in goal, and suddenly head coaching decisions become very important. What Gordon has here is an incredible opportunity to show what he can do, and take this team to a new level.

Those are the big three storylines in my opinion, but two other important ones to keep track of as we get into the season:

1) Injuries: Injuries were a huge part of this team’s struggles last year. There is little you can really do to prevent them, but whether or not the players are able to stay on the ice this year will obviously impact the season. 2) The Lighthouse Issue: It’s as simple as this. No Lighthouse, no New York Islanders. We’ll get into this more as the season progresses. But everyday it seems more and more likely that local dimwits and political hacks are going to force your Islanders off the Island.

Check back later in the week as I give you my predictions for the season, and a preview of the season/home opener against the Penguins. Right here on WFAN.com.

The Goal is Goals

With Valentines Day approaching, I will tell you something all of those experienced in love will know. No relationship is perfect. However, as many of you know, it’s how you deal with the problems that truly make a difference. This in many ways is what has happened to the Islanders.

Capital Punishment

There’s really nothing I hate more than when I sit down at night, turn on a hockey game, and know within the first 3 minutes of the game that it’s already over. I realize the Capitals are one of the best teams in the league, but is it so much to ask that the Islanders at least put up some sort of fight? I’d rather watch cute kitten videos on YouTube than waste my time with that.

Play Rollie the Goalie!

Even while putting aside my personal distaste for Rick DiPietro’s over aggressive injury style form of play, I have a serious issue with the way the Islanders seem to be rehabbing Rick. Earlier this week, Coach Scott Gordon started Rick in back to back games, less than 48 hrs apart.

Kovalchuk Not Worth It

So the big Islanders rumor of the week isn’t about the Lighthouse Project for a change. No, word on the internet, courtesy of Larry Brooks at the New York Post, is that the Islanders are interested in trading for Ilya Kovalchuk.

Warming Up

I freeze my butt off walking to work, freeze my butt off shoveling snow, and I have to constantly remind myself that there was a time when I actually was warm. It’s cold, miserable, and desolate outside, but the Islanders might be heading for some greener pastures.

A New Lease on Life

Ding dong the witch is dead. Which old witch? The god-awful lease the Islanders used to have with SMG. Yes, it has been awhile since we’ve discussed the Lighthouse Project...

Stocking Stuffed With Problems

The holidays mean many things to me. Eating cookie dough until my stomach hurts, ordering girlie holiday lattes at Starbucks, arguing with pushy sales people, and polishing off a bottle of red wine on Christmas Eve as I fall asleep under my Aunt and Uncle’s tree. For the Islanders it means a stocking stuffed with problems.

My Monday on Long Island

Now that the Islanders are home that means I can actually get out to see them every once in awhile. So Monday that’s exactly what I did. I started my day bright and early...

No D = Disappointment

I’m sitting here deciding whether or not I should describe the Islanders last 3 games as merely disappointing or completely disgusting. I would say it’s probably a little bit of both.

Clicking On All Cylinders

It’s nights like Thursday that really make you smile if you’re an Islanders fan. Everything worked to perfection and the Islanders were able to beat a very good team.

A November To Remember

It’s time for a quick history lesson. In 1812, Napoleon attacked Russia. His army was destroyed in the fruitless campaign. Within a year Napoleon had lost his entire empire.

Remaining Relevant

We’re about a quarter of the way through the NHL season and it seems the entire NHL has gone Islander crazy. Why? All because they don’t suck. How insulting is that? Analysts everywhere are impressed by the Islanders, not because of all the good things they’re doing, but because they can’t believe the team has even been competitive.

Good But Not That Good

The Islanders are a good team. The problem is they’re not that good. Sound confusing? Let me explain. A month and a half through the season I think it’s fair to call the Islanders a good hockey team.

Road Test

The Isles face a big test of their own through the rest of this month. They have 7 straight games on the road, and from now until December, 12 of their next 14 games will be on the road...

Buckle Up

Ok, I’m going to start this blog out by giving myself a little pat on the back. Amidst a sea of voices complaining about how the Islanders are hopeless, one man, that’d be me, told you not to write this team off yet.

Searching For An Identity

As October races to a close, kids everywhere will be figuring out what they want to be for Halloween. This in a way is not much un-like the Islanders who with one month of the season heading into the books still aren’t sure who they’re going to be either.

It's Either The Lighthouse Or They Leave

Some days it seems people have gone Lighthouse crazy. Last week, an article in the Long Island Press declared the project was dead and Charles Wang was moving on. Wang went on to dismiss the article, but did take his time in doing so.

When The Going Gets Tough

The Islanders are only four games into the season, but they've already found themselves at a crucial turning point.  There's something wrong with this team, and it has nothing to do with the talent of the names on the roster.

It's Time to See the Light

Here's the sad fact about the Islanders. In their present form they can never be profitable on Long Island. It doesn't matter how dedicated Islanders fans are, and it doesn't matter how many times they sell out the Coliseum.

A Good First Step

The Islanders 4-3 shootout loss to the Penguins is probably the greatest loss a team could ever have.

Aiming For A Meaningful March

If I was one of those really obnoxious people that think they're funny I'd make the following witty joke right now to start this season preview: "Well one thing I can guarantee is the Islanders aren't going to win the Stanley Cup this year."
