One of the best college basketball stories in the East is taking place in little Kingston, Rhode Island. Brooklyn born Jim Baron is trying to dance this March with his Rhode Island Rams. URI is on a roll— 19-3 overall and only Xavier and Charlotte have better records in A-10 conference play.
One of the worst losses in a long time took place for St. John's last night. The Red Storm lost 84-72 at Rutgers. If you can't beat Rutgers....it is safe to say things are not looking good for Norm Roberts and his team the rest of the way.
We are officially in the meat & potatoes of conference play. Across the country...from mid majors to big time schools...there have been some nice stories throughout the landscape of college basketball this season. Once again, both locally and nationally, college hoops hasn't disappointed.
Metropolitan area college basketball will always be the greatest thing in the world, even during a season like this one. There have not been many bright spots thus far for our local teams. Yet, there have been some nice surprises!
It was a big game and a big loss for Norm Roberts and St. John’s Sunday evening against the Providence Friars. The game was at Carnesecca Arena and was significant for both teams. This had to be a possible road win in Keno Davis’ mind before the season began….because there are not many in Big East play. And if St. John’s is going to take that next step this season
How about Saturday’s Big East opener that aired on CBS? Undefeated West Virginia beat Seton Hall, 90-84, in overtime and improved to 10-0 overall, 1-0 in conference. Seton Hall is 10-2 overall after dropping their conference opener.
It always feels like college basketball is officially here when the Jimmy V Classic hits town. Sure there's other tournaments and the season is over 3 weeks old already....but there's nothing like hoops at MSG with the holidays approaching.
After getting off to a 10-2 start, the hot seat around St. John’s head coach Norm Roberts was finally starting to cool off. Then the Big East schedule started up. St. John’s has lost eight of their last ten games, including five in a row...
As we pass the half way point in conference play, both Villanova and Syracuse have stood out as not only two of the top teams in the Big East, but also two of the best teams in the entire country. Both teams were expected to make the NCAA Tournament this year, but both in totally different ways.
The Big East and college basketball took a big hit on Monday as Connecticut Huskies Hall of Fame head coach Jim Calhoun has taken a leave of absence from the school because of health reasons.
Three weeks into conference play the Big East is once again showing its dominance and all the people who before the season thought this would be a down season for the conference are clearly mistaken. With 6 teams ranked in the top 25 and 5 teams in the top 10 in RPI the Big East once again is the class of college basketball and could easily earn 8 bids for the NCAA Tournament.
When you think of the Big East the first thing that immediately comes to mind are the great coaches. Between Jim Calhoun, Jim Boeheim, Rick Pitino and Bob Huggins they have over 28 conference championships, 2,800 wins, 11 Final Fours and 4 National Championships.
With the first week of Big East play coming to an end, we learned that once again the Big East is going to be one of the top conferences in the country and easily can flirt with the possibility of having eight teams go to the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Georgetown and West Virginia who are expected to be dancing come March got off to a great 2-0 start in league play.
With the holiday season here and New Year’s around the corner, Big East play is underway. The conference schedule got off to a thrilling start on Saturday as West Virginia beat Seton Hall in overtime, 90-84. During the 2008-2009 season Big East Basketball showed once again why it is arguably the top conference in all of college hoops by sending 7 teams to the NCCA tournament.
