Roberts Rant: Sorry NBA...It's 2005 All Over Again!

New York, NY (WFAN)  -- I gotta tell ya...the 2008 NBA playoffs have been quite entertaining. We've seen a bunch of Game 7's, and we have seen the teams we expected advance to the NBA's final four. The league and David Stern are now this close to their nirvana...a Lakers/Celtics NBA finals...but they are also even closer to their personal TV ratings hell. Pistons/Spurs.

I'm selfish...so I don't personally care what Mr. Stern and the rest of the suits care about, and I also don't care about what the casual NBA fan wants either. The best NBA finals...maybe not the sexiest, but the series that is most evenly matched, the series that will drive Stern to the local watering hole will be the one we will see. Get set America for Spurs/Pistons II.

Why the Celtics will come up short

Thank goodness for Beantown that the Celtics got home court advantage because of their dominate regular season, because without that they would be extinct already. They have been dreadful at home and have barely skated by against two teams that they should have handled easier. I'm not surprised Boston is here. I'm surprised in how difficult it was for Boston to GET here. Josh Smith is going to be real good and so will the Hawks someday, but there was no way a team as inexperienced as that should've taken a 66 win team to the brink of elimination. And as great as LeBron is, the rest of the Cavs should have been no match for the deep Celtics, but again they took them to the brink. The Pistons are better than Atlanta and Cleveland. Assuming Chauncey Billups is healthy the Pistons will be tough to beat. Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Billups - take your pick on who their best player is. Plus they have depth, as Rodney Stuckey proved in filling in admirably for Billups. And you know the Pistons can win on the road. And if they can steal one in Boston, the question will start to sink into the Celtics mind... "can we actually win away from the Garden?" I love the Celtics depth...PJ Brown was money in Game 7 against the Cavs, and Cassell has been a nice back up to Rajon Rondo. But overall the Pistons are playing with a mission, they have been there many times, but need to get back to the big dance if they want to save Flip Saunders job.

RESULT: Pistons in 6

Respect the Champs

I have great respect for the New Orleans Hornets...they deserve a standing ovation for what they have accomplished. Problem was they ran into the champs and it is about time that the Spurs get the respect they deserve. I mean for a defending championship team they seem like they are forgotten sometimes. What they proved in the semi finals is that they still have that will to pull games out late. After being unable to crack the Hornets armor in New Orleans they busted through in Game 7. Tony Parker hit the big shot when they needed it and they contained the great Chris Paul. Now they will bring the Lakers back to reality. Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol have been good, but remember this is uncharted playoff territory for both of them. While the likes of Duncan, Parker, Ginobli, Finley, Bowen, and big shot Bob have been here many times before. This team is on a mission, and I think San Antonio will give the Lakers match up problems plus they are deeper. They have never won back to back titles...they are on a mission to make that happen this year. And keep this in mind. Though the Lakers are quite different from the three peat teams...the Spurs have won 4 championships since 1999, the Lakers 3. This is a battle for decade dominance.

RESULT: Spurs in 7

Wait...if both of these results happen I will have completed the perfect series picks through the NBA playoffs...no way that happens!

Roberts Rant: The Right Choice?
Mike D'Antoni is a fine coach with a solid resume. He has had great regular season success with the Suns and great all round success while coaching in Europe. Mike seems like a nice guy, who I'm sure we'd all love to have a beer with. With that said...
Roberts Blog: The Aftershock!
So how do things look for the locals now that the trade deadline has passed? Eh, more of the same! We'll get to the Knicks in a bit, because they still stink, and I'm starting to run out of ways to express that obvious fact.
Roberts Blog: A Dear Jason Letter
Dear Jason, Wow, I can't believe it's really over! I mean all the good times and all the hard times and now its finally really finished. Man, I'll tell ya these 6 ½ years went by like the speed of light.
Roberts Blog: Power Down Isiah
It's like knowing you are going to break up with your girlfriend, but before dumping her, you let her rearrange your house! It's like giving her the control to sell your car, or name your dog! That would be insanity.
Roberts Blog: Time To Rebuild
Ok deep breath. The New Jersey Nets will NOT win a championship anytime soon. For many this has been obvious for years, but for some diehards this is a cold, hard taste of reality. This week it finally happened...reality sank in! It's time
