Recco Report: NY Jets Draft Preview

New York, NY (WFAN)  -- Let's get one thing clear right off the bat. I do NOT think that picking Darren McFadden with the 6th overall selection is a bad move. However, if I was Mike Tannenbaum I wouldn't do it. Instead, I would trade down to pick the best cornerback or wide receiver available. Depending on how far they move down will obviously dictate which direction to go in.

Let me explain my thinking. The Jets have been the most active team in the NFL this offseason. They outlined their needs and promptly addressed them. They needed a big-time guard and they signed Alan Faneca. They needed a speed rusher and they inked Calvin Pace. Need more on the offensive line, go get Damien Woody. Want to plug up the line of scrimmage to make the 3-4 defense more effective, make a deal for Kris Jenkins. Point is, the Jets filled every need in my eyes except for 2 1/2 of them: Cornerback (Someone to play opposite D. Revis), Wide Receiver (Coles & Cotchery are solid but they need a game breaker) and Quarterback (This one is the 1/2 need because of the questions surrounding Pennington and Clemens). I don't see running back as a need. Is Darren McFadden a game breaker? He sure was in college, as was Reggie Bush. How is that going in New Orleans? It's going ok. Not great but ok.

How do we know that McFadden is the real deal? How do we know that his off-the-field issues won't be a problem? We don't. So why just take the best player available rather than making the move that best fits this team? Not to mention with the upgrade on the offensive line, you can count on better production from a pretty good 1-2 punch of Thomas Jones & Leon Washington. In a four win season with an O-line that had a revolving door, Jones & Washington still combined to run for 1,500 yards. (1,472 to be exact)

We'll get back to the quarterback issue in a moment, but believing that there is no chance that the Jets will take Matt Ryan at number six, let's get to some scenerios. Lets say for example the Bengals or Saints come calling and the Jets move down from number six to number nine or 10. If that happened top-cornerback prospects such as Leodis McKelvin or Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie would be the way to go. If they trade down to 22 with the Cowboys (who many believe want McFadden) then its possible that Texas wideout Limas Sweed will be there. And Sweed is one guy that intrigues me. If not for a wrist injury Sweed would've been a top ten pick, nevermind a mid to late first rounder. He has everything the Jets need at the position, good size (6'4" and 210lbs) and good speed. Put him into the rotation with Coles & Cotchery and you have one heck of a wide receiver trio.

And that brings me back to the quarterback spot. Is it possible that the Jets would draft Ryan? I don't think so. The reason is simple. You don't spend the amount of money the Jets spent this off-season to bring in a rookie quarterback that will make a fortune and take two to three years to develop. I still believe the plan is for Pennington to beat out Clemens in training camp. The additions of Faneca and Woody should help to keep Pennington on his feet rather than his back and the Jets should be able to win games, possibly alot of them.

No doubt Saturday will be alot of fun. There will likely be plenty of surprises. And remember one thing, there is not one scout, GM, fan, player or coach who really knows how good or bad any player drafted will be. They can say they do, but they couldn't be more wrong. If that wasn't the case, then somebody please explain to me, Ki-Jana Carter (1-1995), Lawrence Phillips (6-1996), Courtney Brown (1-2000), David Carr (1-2002), Jonathon Sullivan (6-2003) & of course Ryan Leaf (2-1998), just to name a few! And oh yeah, everyone is such an expert that Tom Brady was passed over 198 times before the Patriots selected him in the 6th round back in April 2000, with the 199th overall pick. Yes, it's so easy that the quarterback that might be the best ever by the time his career ends, was a 6th round pick.

Give me a break.

Recco Report: The First Look
Got my first impressions of the Jets new rookie class this morning. Just in terms of attitude, Erik Ainge seems to be years ahead of everyone. Acts like an attorney more than a football player. Appears very confident and calculated.
Recco Report: Jets Draft Recap
Well it may not have been very exciting in terms of the top six picks but overall I think the Jets had themselves a pretty solid draft. No, not a lot of drama with McFadden & Ryan off the board to the Raiders and Falcons, but really, who cares?
